The Concubine Daughter A Novel Pai Kit Fai Books

I'm not a good reviewer of anything ! The cover of the book caught my attention a few years ago but was a afraid to read it because of the length. I am going to Japan during this summer and it again caught my attention. This time the length didn't scare me. I loved this book! I couldn't put it down. My knitting and other things were tossed by the wayside. I found it to be truly enjoyable and for me educational regarding the treatment of women in the Far East. It was sad, so sad in parts that I found myself crying. I found myself connecting with the daughter, I can't remember names! Her life was was so difficult and she found a wY to survive. And her daughter's life! What a life! I just really loved this story, I found the charters well developed. I felt the back ground was well explained. It, for me, gave me a clearer understanding about Asaian culture. I love it, and wish it didn't end!

The Concubine Daughter A Novel Pai Kit Fai Books Reviews

This is one of my all time favorite books. I fell in love with the characters and hated when it ended. I loved it so much that I bought it for all my friends to read!
Pai Kit Fai's language transports the reader to China and throughout time. Insightful character development in a traditional cultural backdrop. Unfortunately, his editor needs a reprimand for the duplicate and confusing content. Overall, a superb historical fiction.
It was a good book. I think it was maybe longer than it needed to be, nonetheless, I read it over a few days and really enjoyed it. The characters drag you it. The story of what happens to the girls is heartbreaking. At times the characters can seem kind of superficial, but it is a good story.
I have a Granddaughter who was adopted from China so I love learning about the customs of modern day China as well as long ago customs and lore. This was like a roller coaster. At first I found it so sad, then I was elated than down again. It was this way through the entire book. It kept me on edge waiting for wanting to see what was going to occur next. It never left me disappointed. Long book and worth every page. Thank you Pai Kit Fai.
The story was lovely. It was like reading two stories back to back. It was quit interesting to go through the decades and to read of the changes from the time of the boxers to the Japanese invasions. I wish the book had explored more of the ongoing politics of the different time periods covered in the story. The biggest disappointment, however was in the glaring copywriting errors. There were name mistakes linking main characters to scenes in which they were not present. Even at the end of the book, further reading recommendations attribute "The Bonesetter's Daughter" to Lisa See. It was written by Amy Tan. Even though the errors didn't gravely affect the the story, they are a distraction.
I liked this book. I was really captivated by the story and its characters. It fell apart for me when I reflected on the age of the heroines. Li Xia was 16 when she married Ben Deveroux and Siu Sing was 15 when she married Toby. In short, they were children. These children have wisdom far beyond their years to the point where it became a credibility issue for me. The husbands were both Westerners yet neither they nor their colleagues seemed to have a problem with the age of the girls. If you didn't do the math (which Idid) you would assume that the protagonists were young women in their 20s. Despite this, it was a good book and I do recommend it.
This novel covers the lives of three generations of Chinese women and their often brutal, cruel and sometimes loving worlds. It is sometimes a very painful journey, but the courage of their faith and belief in one's own value (especially as a woman in China) transcends the horrific trials they each had to face. Words cannot express the sweeping grandeur and richness of this book and the way it transports you to another place and time. The author, Pai Kit Fai, married into a close-knit Chinese family who opened up their customs, histories and traditions to him/her?? and his/her knowledge and research as an author is remarkable. I hated the fact that I had to end this novel - wanting to keep on reading it forever. I highly recommend this novel to anyone interested in the Chinese culture and I will be looking for other works by the author. Most excellent reading.
