A beautifully illustrated book for the Holidays about Kersti, a mischievous little girl who is always misbehaving, much to the dismay of her six older sisters and parents. As St. Nicholas Day approaches, Kersti worries that she won't receive any gifts and sets out on an adventure. First published in 1940, this new edition has been abridged and adapted by the author's family to make it more accessible to young readers today.

Kersti and Saint Nicholas Hilda Van Stockum Books

I have always loved this book because it deviates from the rule that St. Nicholas only gives presents to good children. Kersti is naughty but she is also a good talker and she persuades the good bishop to give presents to naughty children, just this once. If you are bringing up your kids according to strict Justice Down the Line principles, you might well not like this idea that a fast-talking little Dutch girl wins over the bishop. But then again, along with justice there is this idea of mercy, and Kersti is bringing out the merciful side of St. Nick. It could be that at the Last Judgement more of us may be relying on mercy than we think. Anyway, this is a wry, funny book. Disclosure: The book was written and illustrated by my late mother, and the new version has been changed so that the naughty kids get their presents out of a "reserve" and the good children are not deprived. My mother wrote the book in the late 1930s when Hitler was a threat to Holland, and the original version of Kersti may have subconsciously been an appeal for mercy to Holland - which it did not get from Hitler. Her birthplace, Rotterdam was destroyed by bombing.

Kersti and Saint Nicholas Hilda Van Stockum Books Reviews

It's wonderful to be able to obtain this old childhood classic again!
beautiful pictures. a good spiritual message for the less than perfect in us.
I wanted to buy this story because I'm Dutch and want my children to be exposed to some Dutch culture. I was attracted to the beautiful illustrations more than anything but the story looked appealing too ( a naughty little girl has an encounter with Sinterklaas).Unfortunately the story has a lot of words and I'm not sure my 6 year old would have the attention span for the entire story in one sitting. Our older kids probably wouldn't be interested in the happenings of a little Dutch girl. This would be a great chapter book read.
the little girls I gave this book to absolutely loved it!
such a cute chapter book.
Love all of this authors books. This particular book is so neat to read for your children at Christmas time. Got the book for my girls and they absolutely love it.
I'm so glad I found this book--I will definitely be rereading it every Christmas. I particularly wanted to find a Saint Nicholas Day story, to have something more Christmasy than books actually about Saint Nicholas for Saint Nicholas Day. But whenever you read it, this is a delightful story about an utterly charming rascal of a four year old—in the way only a four year old can be.

On the negative side, the quality of the book isn't great. It's OK, and it's a nice, big, easy to read size. But the color pictures aren't reproduced that well and a big chunk of them gets lost in the center margin. I hope they will release a better produced version and/or a version in the future.
