Written by Lillian Jackson Braun beginning in 1966, this is a cozy mystery series featuring Jim Qwilleran, our steadfast journalistic hero, and Koko, his intuitive Siamese cat. Along with Koko's companion Yum Yum, Qwill and Koko solve the murders encountered on Qwill's beat.

This is the 3rd book in the series. In this book Jim Qwilleran is still writing about design and fabric for the Daily Fluxion, but a contest has come up that he hopes will put him on the local map, and back on the path of serious journalism. After a ride with a cabby, he is determined to write a heartfelt tale of the down and out in Junktown.

And then Qwill finds out Junktown isn't full of heroin addicts, but antiques, and a full collection of the odd birds who deal in them. Still, there's a story to write and a contest to win. Junktown it is.

Another delightful installment of the adventures of Koko and Yum Yum. This time, Qwill enters a Christmastime contest to see who can write the most holiday article. He moves to Junktown a rundown part of the city that is slated to be torn down. Of course, will encounters many unique and interesting antique dealers none of whom are as they appear to be. There are unsolved murders which, with the aid of his cats, solve. I heartily recommend this book.
Ms Braun wrote a series of very interesting stories. She has a way of developing characters that make them seem real. I think Jim Qwilleran would be very interesting to meet if he really existed. If you like quirky light mystery and or cats, you will enjoy this series of books. Anyone who knows Michigan will also recognize the traits of Detroit and the Upper Peninsula in many of her books.
This is a pretty fair little mystery, part of a much longer series, which features a newspaper reporter named Qwilleran. In this outing, he undertakes to write a series of articles about a disreputable part of his city called Junktown. He is surprised to discover that it is emerging from its druggie past to become a more of a ‘junque’-town, a collection of little stores featuring curios, cast-offs, and some genuine antiques. The suspicious death of one of the shop owners kicks off the action, and Qwill begins to probe.

The problem with the book and indeed the whole series, is the cutsie-poo presence of Qwill’s two cats, Koko and Yum Yum. Though mute and fundamentally inactive, they act as Qwill’s foils as he ruminates about features of his investigation. They also act, it must be said, as the central selling point for Ms. Braun’s core constituency addled, frowsy women who simply adore cats.

Lilian Jackson Braun (1913-2011) published three mystery novels between 1966 and 1968, works that established central character James Qwilleran as divorced, a recovering alcoholic, and a newspaper reporter who finds himself unexpectedly drawn to a pair of Siamese cats—and who uses their unexpected insights to unravel the murders he encounters in his work. All three books were more about character than mystery, and they were popular bestsellers of the era. For reasons that remain unclear, Braun stopped the series at that point—and then unexpectedly revived it eighteen years later, ultimately producing 29 novels and several three related works.

In my opinion, the three early novels are the best in the series; while most of her books have tremendous charm, her later books are very loosely written (several of her final books so much so that they are extremely weak) and increasingly fanciful; her first novels, however, have a tighter construction and a more forceful narrative. The third novel, THE CAT WHO TURNED ON AND OFF, was published in 1967, and presents leading character Qwill as a recovering alcoholic and now a journalist for a newspaper named The Daily Fluxion. Having successfully struggled with an arts beat and then an interior design special tabloid, he is now eager to prove himself for once and all with a series describing “Christmas in Junktown—” a rundown area of the city that has also become a thriving junk and antique shop district.

Qwill finds a new apartment in the process—and a new romantic interest—but he is scarcely on the job when he learns of the questionable death of one of the district’s most noted shopkeepers—and other deaths are not far behind. But with a little help from super-smart Siamese cat Koko and the delicious Yum Yum, Qwill may not only be able to expose the killer, but save the district from the wrecking ball. The book introduces Iris Cobb, who will figure in later novels. Braun will never compete with the likes of Agatha Christie, but her characters, situations, and settings are long on charm, and her novels make for enjoyable flyweight reading. Recommended.

I like The Cat Who… series with reporter James Qwilleran and his two Siamese cats, Koko and Yum Yum. This is the third book in the series. It is not quite as much fun as the later books that take place in Moose County with their endlessly entertaining cast of locals. But this one happens in a rather run-down part of town known as Junktown, which has its own cast of characters. And it is still a pretty decent cat mystery.

Junktown, contrary to Qwilleran’s expectations, is not a haven for drunks, druggies, and skid-row types (although it turns out he is able, with the cats’ help, to uncover a drug-dealing operation there). It actually got its name from the many antique shops clustered there. The people who frequent these establishments are known as ‘junkers.' Included in this group are Qwilleran’s boss and his wife.

Looking for a more permanent place to live, Qwilleran rents a room from one of the antique dealers. But before he has even gone this far, he has discovered a recent accident that may not be an accident. The victim was his room’s previous tenant.

When his landlord also suffers a fatal ‘accident,’ the stakes go up considerably, and it’s a good thing Qwilleran has the cats on his side, or he too might meet up with one of those accidents.
