I didn't expect this to be a great book because I usually don't find stand alone novels that I like. I got this book in 2011. At that time, Amazon offered and promoted more free books and more free first books in different series as a way to entice readers to buy the rest of the series if they liked the first one. Now, I kind of wish that this wasn't a stand alone book. I usually try to keep a few stand alone books on my Kindle for when I can't buy the next book in a series I'm reading right away. I loved this book. The title gives a part of the plot away. I won't bore you with a plot summary as I know other reviewers are fond of doing that. I appreciate that this book has chapter demarcations. Chapter demarcations make it so much easier to see how close you are to the end of a chapter or to find a stopping place when you need to do so. If you like romance mixed with a bit of the supernatural, you might like this book. I say give it a shot. Have at it because I don't think you'll be disappointed.

3 stars - content, 1 star - free ebook
Ravyn Skyler narrowly escapes death at the hands of a serial killer and now she must find him before he can kill again. Nick Lassiter is a private detective with issues and teaming up with Ravyn will be just the beginning of the troubles that now comes their way. Magic, mayhem and heart rendering emotions are brewing into something both Nick and Ravyn have no control over; all the while dark magic and evil minds are plotting to destroy them. Can they stop death before death stops them?
The story was OK. At about 48% ( edition) the story started to get interesting. This book didn't have much suspense and there was no mystery as the reader is aware of who the bad guys are. The end of the book was lacking a little also. I was hoping Nick would have to work a little harder, but all in all, the book was OK.
This was a free ebook which I gave 1 star for. I feel I enjoyed the book a little more only because it was free, I would have regretted paying for it. Not really the type of book I was hoping for by the description and name of the book. I was hoping for a little more magic and a little more suspense. But I gave 3 stars because I was able to finish the book just as quickly as other books I have read and been more interested in.
I would recommend this book as a FREE read only, I would not pay more than $.99 for this book.
I started this book by reading the first few pages online during my lunch break. I ordered it and for the first time wished I had a with 3G so I could continue reading it. I started it after dinner and read this book in an evening and part of the next day. It was an excellent read and wasn't filled with distractions from misspellings, poor grammar or typos. To say I was hooked on the first sentence might actually be true, definitely by the end of the first page. Since so many others have highlighted the story, I won't bother. I highly recommend this book if you are into suspense or romance. The witchcraft was minimal, so if that is a turn off for you, you might still like this book. The characters were well developed and three dimensional. I look forward to reading more books by Alicia Dean.
This was a surprise for me. I'm not usually a fan of reads regarding witches and secret covens. I love the paranormal genre, but the cruelty done in day's gone past to women accused of witchcraft has always made me sad and angry. This was a well written story and I look forward to reading more of Alicia Dean's work
Heart of a Witch is a romantic fantasy. This is a genre that I usually don't read or even like but did like this one. Ravyn is of a family of witches. She isn't as likeable as her sister Sorina because Sorina is more of a conformist. The reader gets the feeling that Ravyn's identity is wrapped up in being a witch. She struggles to remain true to the laws and rules of the coven but at the same time she resents the feeling of restriction that the coven law puts on use of powers. I do think the reader can sense a change of character from a cold bitchy witch who dislikes t mortals and what she thinks they stand for into a warmer human witch who feels the power of love. The book's view seems to be That magic power of evil is in can be more powerful than good magic because there are no restrictions on the use of black magic or dark forces but still good often finds the weak link in evil. Love is also a strong powerful magic of its own. I wanted to slap Ravyn at times for being so selfish and standoffish.
I would recommend the book to everyone. It has some twist and turns, some mystery. Also a love story.
Its a book that has a little bit of mystery, twist and turns and some romantic scenes (not in to much details). I would recommend the book for everyone.
I enjoyed the novel plot and characters. It was well edited and even if the rules Ravyn and her coven lived by seemed a little too strict, it was entirely believable. Great read. Well edited.
I did something with this book that I swore I'd never do again, read all night to finish it. That says a heck of a lot for the book. For this reason I give it 4 stars instead of 3. The "but" has to do with several weak points in the plot. The coven's constant harping on "no harm" even at the expense of protecting yourself goes a bit too far in my opinion. How the bad guy's amassing of great power comes about is weakly developed. The ending has enough holes to drive a truck through, yet is still very entertaining, if not completely satisfying. The romance development could be more robust (not talking about sex here, but relationship). I did like the fact that the book wasn't overwhelmed with erotica, even though there was a bit of it. I prefer books like this where the romance is not all about sex.
I recommend the book for a fun and absorbing read.
